Bridges of Ethereum County: Flipside Crypto

Bridges play a pivotal role in the functioning of the blockchain ecosystem.

As highlighted by Flipside Crypto analyst @aadharsh2010 in the recent Our Network newsletter, examining trends in both directions of these bridges provides a more comprehensive insight into the decision-making of DeFi users.

For instance, the Ronin Bridge of Axie Infinity takes the lead in transaction volume. Meanwhile, since its March launch, the Terra Bridge has seen heightened activity on the Terra network.

The correlation between news interest and traffic/interactive addresses has similarly affected Solana’s Sollet Bridge following a significant surge in public interest in Solana.

However, as noted by @aadharsh2010 below, certain bridges inherently pose more complexity than others.

    How Bridge Architecture Impacts Transactions

The chart below illustrates that a single address initiates transactions to the Matic Ether Bridge’s smart contract. Conversely, the Matic Ether contract distributes tokens to multiple addresses.

By representing the entire chain of contracts that a transaction undergoes with a single transaction ID, reading the origin address mitigates the concerns raised by the previous graph.

How Routers Led to the Thorchain Hack

As noted here, the ETH router of Thorchain served as the point of interaction for the whitehat hack on July 9 (as well as subsequent hacks).

It seems that the initial hack led to a partial alteration in the router (alongside some security adjustments). This modification remained in place until Thorchain temporarily ceased operations for additional security enhancements.

    RenBridge as a Counterexample

What stands out about RenBridge is the balanced nature concerning the direction taken across the bridge.

In this scenario, this balance arises because bridge transactions must be directed to the genesis address to manage the mint/release events for renTokens. These tokens are subsequently assigned to the same address and hold equivalent value to the inputted assets.

    Conclusions

Overall, it’s evident that bridge traffic and volume surge in both directions with heightened excitement and price fluctuations.

What lies ahead is the evolution of bridges in a landscape where every blockchain is inherently designed for seamless communication. Legitimate discussions persist about the overall advantage of cross-chain networking, even as it brings attention to emerging chains and facilitates the dissemination of innovative concepts.

There is a potential scenario where extensive bridging and complete interoperability among blockchains could create a future where the failure of a single protocol or blockchain doesn’t experience isolation. This could, in turn, cause significant market shocks throughout the DeFi space.
